Notting Hill has long been famous for its mile-long Portobello Road street market and the colourful Notting Hill Carnival, held annually in August. In recent years, the area has risen to become one of the most desirable and expensive in London, a status reflected in the 1999 film "Notting Hill". Once known for its potteries, pig farms and prosperity, Notting Hill fell into decline after the Second World War, an era which brought poverty, overcrowding and racial tensions. In the Sixties and Seventies, Notting Hill became a vibrant countercultural homebase for hippies, bohemians and musicians playing everything from psychedelic rock to reggae, while punk groups including The Clash sang about the Westway flyover.
