Northwich, known as The Salt Town, lies in the heart of Cheshire on the Cheshire Plains and at the junction of the River Dane and the River Weaver. It gained the name Salt Town because for centuries it has been a centre of the country’s salt industry. Salt has been produced here since before Roman times, the whole area lies on a vast bed of salt. At its peak in the 19th century Northwich was a heavily industrialised area, because of the salt industry other similar industrial processes were undertaken here, tanneries, shipbuilding and chemical works were all established in the area – the coming of the canal systems and railways further enhancing this area as a location for industry.
