Newtown lies alongside the River Severn and as well as being the largest town in Powys it is famous for two people who arguably changed lives with their ideas. It is here in Newtown that Robert Owen was born and he subsequently went on to establish the Co-Operative Movement which set better working and living standards for workers. Whist Pryce was the founder of Pryce Jones – the world’s first mail order company. However there is more to Newton than this fame, the town is known in Welsh as Drenewydd and was established as a settlement around 1321 so its pedigree within history is well founded.
