Known for its motorway services near junction 14 on the M1, Newport Pagnell is an historic northeast Buckinghamshire market town, not far from the large and lively Milton Keynes. The town dates back to the Roman era and its proximity to the River Ouse (now offering delightful riverside walks) has meant prominence throughout history, including fortification during the civil war. These remains can still be seen on the town's 185acre common, Bury Field. Newport Pagnell is the only place in England where parchment is still made; having previously been the centre of the lace trade, and the Doomsday Book is currently bound in vellum (calf’s skin) parchment.
