The village of Neston is to be found in the County of Merseyside on that peninsula of land known as The Wirral. Today Neston is often referred to as the “Jewel in the Crown†however the village was until some 200 years ago a major port exporting coal from the local mines . A combination of events saw trade from Neston as a port suffer, the River Dee silted up preventing sailing vessels from entering and Liverpool grew in strength as a trading port. Today Neston enjoys a deserved reputation as a place to visit, it did have a railway but this was closed in the mid 1950’s and converted into the Wirral Country Park, linking the towns of the West Wirral peninsula.
