The town of Nelson is to be found on the edge of the moorland fells of Lancashire, it was originally known as Marsden but in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson the town changed its name and today its Town Hall is the seat of Pendle Borough Council. It’s rise in status was as a direct result of the Industrial Revolution when the town became an important centre for the textile industry throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Cotton weaving was the major trade undertaken in the town however the industry that was to bring success was also responsible for its decline as through the 20th century cheaper competitors and man made materials entered the market place to the detriment of Nelson.
