The historic town of Nailsea in Somerset has a thriving and well maintained town centre. The history of the town has been partially shaped by the presence of pennant sandstone, which has been quarried in the area since Roman times. Coal was also mined at Nailsea from 1507 until the last pit closed in 1882, beaten by the larger mines in South Wales. The presence of coal bought John Robert Lucas to establish a glassworks at Nailsea in 1788, partly to meet the needs for window glass bought about by the Industrial Revolution.
