Situated on the edge of the Somerset Levels and seven miles north west of Yeovil, Martock is a large village with a population of almost 4500. It has easy access to the A303, the main trunk road running from Basingstoke in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon. Martock derives its name from 'Mart' and 'Oak', from a market once held under an oak tree in the centre of the town. A fluted column designed in imitation of the pillar of Trojan at Rome now stands on the site of the discontinued market. The village is worth visiting for its Hamstone buildings, including the Treasurer's House (dating from the 13th century) and the parish church, said to be the second largest in Somerset.
