Market Drayton is in North Shropshire and is a traditional market town first gaining its charter in the mid 13th century and today still holds one of the liveliest street markets in the area. As a market town at that time it was famous for the Damson Fairs as textile makers would buy the damsons in order to dye the cloth. The importance of this fruit is still relevant today – on a Wednesday, market day, you can buy jam, gin and pies all containing damsons. Originally a Saxon settlement it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Draitune, in the 17th century there was a tremendous fire here in the town of Drayton, as it was then known, which destroyed most of the town, following this fire the Buttercross was erected in the centre of the town with a bell at the top for people to ring if ever there was another fire.
