The name Lowdham means 'village by the loud stream', although the name was first recorded as 'Lideheme' in 1046. This suggests the origins as being the Norse word 'hlid', or slope, and the suffix heme from the Norse 'heimr' meaning homestead or village. The village itself is situated between Nottingham and Southwell in Nottinghamshire, on the junction of the A612 and A6097. The dual carriageway leading to Doncaster and the north splits the village into two halves. To the west of this road are the old church and castle mound.
