Leuchars is a historic village in north-east Fife in Scotland situated north of the River Eden six miles north-west of St Andrews. There was a settlement in the area from 1100 where Leuchars Castle once stood on Castle Knowe. The railway arrived in 1848 making Leuchars an important junction station which still operates a main line service. The War office acquired land here in 1908 for military testing and the Royal Air Force Station, RAF Leuchars was established in 1920; it is one of the busiest fighter bases and the longest operating military airfields in the world, with its relatively isolated location it is ideal for night training exercises, Tactical Leadership Training and Qualified Weapons Instructor Courses.
