Leith is a town and port in Edinburgh in Scotland situated on the Firth of Forth, 2 miles north of the city centre. From the 12th century the Port of Leith exported coal, animal skins and wool becoming Edinburgh’s official port in 1329, from the early 17th century it was a major centre for whaling. Leith was created a burgh in 1636 before losing nearly two thirds of its population to the plague in1645. Dry docks were built in 1770 and shipbuilding was one of the main industries.
