Latheronwheel is a small village in Caithness County on the north-east coast in the Highlands of Scotland, situated south of Wick and John O Groats. Latheronwheel is an ancient village; archaeological studies in the area have discovered symbol stones dating back to the Pictish era. Latheronwheel was a planned village laid out in 1835 by landowner, Captain Robert Dunbar; the hotel was the first building to be constructed. The harbour and small lighthouse were built on the southern headland in 1840 and the village became a busy fishing port which prospered during the 19th century great herring boom.
