Lancaster's history can be traced back several thousand years and some of it has been remarkably bloodthirsty – public hangings, witchcraft and the slave trade have all been part of Lancaster’s history. In 1612 James I was in the throne and obsessed with witchcraft he made it a capital crime and Witchfinders travelled the country seeking out those who practiced this art. To the South East of Lancaster is Pendle Hill and it was here that the notorious case of the Pendle Witches was to begin its story resulting in the women from two local families who were subsequently hanged at Lancaster Castle.
