Kirkwall is the ‘capital’ of the Scottish Orkney Islands and is situated on the stretch of land where east and west mainland meets at a magnificent natural harbour. The town was established by the Norse in the 11th century and was originally known as ‘Kirkjuvagr’ Norse for ‘Church Bay’. Kirkwall was awarded city status in 1137 with the founding of St Magnus Cathedral and royal burgh status in 1486 when Orkney was acquired for Scotland. Kirkwall has an airport and harbour, regular flights, cruise ships and ferries bring regular visitors.
