Kirkby Lonsdale is a historic market town just inside the south east boundary of Cumbria, on the River Lune. This market town has some lovely riverside and country walks and is set in the lush Lune Valley between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The view of the river from St. Mary’s churchyard prompted Victorian artist and critic John Ruskin to describe the landscape as some of the loveliest in the country. It became known as Ruskin’s View and inspired a famous painting by Turner.
