King's Cross is casting off unhappy demons to emerge as one of central London's most vital and exciting areas. In Dickens' day, it was filled with poverty-ridden slums. In the early 1900s, it was industrial and busy but no less poor, and then its industry, unfortunately, spiralled into decline. By the 1980s, the name of King's Cross - an important tube and railway hub - was synonymous with prostitution, drugs and crime, although its residents upheld their traditional, friendly community spirit. Today, it's being extensively regenerated in tandem with the launch of St Pancras as London's grand Channel Tunnel Rail Link terminus in November 2007.
