Kilwinning is an ancient town standing on the River Garnock in North Ayrshire, Scotland, 3 miles north of Irvine. The settlement is said to have grown around a church founded by Saint Winin during the 8th century, the prefix ‘Kil’ from Gaelic means church. On the site of the old church, the Tyronensian Abbey c1150 built for monks from Kelso, Kilwinning became an important religious centre. The Abbey was destroyed during the Reformation; the remains of the 13th century south gable are still impressive.
