Johnstone is a town in Renfrewshire in the west of Scotland situated 3 miles south-west of Paisley close to the city of Glasgow. The town was founded in 1781 and planned out by the laird of Johnstone, George Houston. The first mill was built on Mill Brae in 1782 and the town grew as an industrial centre during the 18th and 19th century with its thread and cotton industry. The Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal opened in 1810, it stretched 11 miles from Johnstone to Port Eglinton and was designed to transport textiles, coal, slate and timeber with the passenger boat service operating from 1830, the canal closed in 1881 with the arrival of the railway.
