Off the northern coast of Kent, in the Thames Estuary, lies the Isle of Sheppey - a small island of 36 square miles. The name Sheppey is derived from ‘Sceapige’ an ancient Saxon term literally meaning “island of sheep†and to this day, large flocks graze on the extensive marshland that accounts for much of the island. Originally known as the Isles of Sheppey before the channels which separate them silted up, as the land mass actually consists of three main islands, including those of Harty, Elmley in addition to Sheppey although a multitude of islands exist due to the marshy nature of the land and an abundance of channels and drains.
