The Isle of Harris is not in itself an island but forms the southern part of the ‘Long Island’, the largest and most northerly of the Western Isles of Scotland, the northern part is the Isle of Lewis. Harris is further divided into North and South; North Harris adjoins Lewis by a barrier of high mountains running along their border from Loch Resort in the west to Loch Seaforth in the east. North and South Harris are separated by West and East Loch Tarbet with the main settlement, the village of Tarbet situated on a strip of land between the lochs.
