Until the mid 1950`s Ifield was a small village but was subsumed by the urban expansion of Crawley New Town (now an Urban District). It has managed to retain it`s green and there is still the atmosphere of the village about the place and some fine buildings to be seen. The first part of the name is probably derived from the Old English - iw - meaning yew. The Friends Meeting House is a cottage built in 1676 and still in use, it is thought that the stone for the walls came from nearby Slaugham Place; the roof is of Horsham stone and the building is supported by a heavy oak pillar rising from floor to ceiling.
