Hythe, in company with Dover, Sandwich, New Romney and Hastings, was one of the original Cinque Ports - an ancient federation of towns which received money and privileges in exchange for supplying ships and sailors to defend the coastline. Today, Hythe has neither port nor harbour to commemorate this history: an accumulation of silt and shingle in the Middle Ages effectively separated it from the sea. Building began to climb up the cliffside, and some lovely little streets now look out over the beach, the bay and the Channel.
