Travel back in time to Henry VII’s reign and you will find a rural community relying on agriculture and to supplement their income spinning yarns and weaving in what was a major cottage industry. Horwich though did not gain fame until around 1884 when the Lancachire and Yorkshire Railway Company decided to build a new railway works in the town. The effect on the local economy was startling – the local population rose to 13,000 and for the next 80 years the loco works at Horwich was the major employer and finally closed its doors in 1983.
