Originally a Medieval centre of the cloth trade, the South-Eastern Devon market town of Honiton became famous for lace, pottery and glove making. It still has many shops dedicated to lace, even if it is no longer locally produced. Honiton lace was so well regarded in high circles, it was used in the wedding gown of Queen Victoria and the Christening robe of her first son, Edward, later Edward vii. An excellent collection of Honiton lace is on display at Allhallow’s Museum in the town. In more recent years, Honiton has become synonymous with antiques and antiquarian books, with many local establishments associated with this trade.
