Holmrook, like much of the surrounding country, has Viking roots. The name is derived from the Scandinavian and means “Island of Rooksâ€. The Irish left their mark here too, in the beautiful 9th century cross in the churchyard of St Paul’s Ireton, a mile outside the village. This 10’ high cross pre-dates the arrival of the Norsemen, and is beautifully simple, without figurative design, its decoration being fret and vine patterns. St Paul’s church is a Victorian replacement for a more ancient building, but it is noteworthy for stained-glass windows by Burne-Jones.
