This Wiltshire village was once a thriving market town originally established by the Bishop des Roches of Winchester. By 1754 there were 14 inns and public houses in Hindon. Unfortunately, the same year the town was razed by a terrible fire that left just one of the inns and little else of the old town standing after burning out of control for four hours. A new town was quickly established with help of a relief fund that collected money from as far afield as Canterbury. When the first mail coach stopped here on its journey from London to Exeter on 2nd August, 1784 the town was on the up again.
