The hamlet of Hickstead is situated on the A23 roughly mid-way between Brighton & Crawley and 3 miles west of Burgess Hill. The name is probably derived from the Old English `heah or heghst - stede = high or highest place. Hickstead was a freehold manor of Saddlescombe - on the South Downs near to Brighton - which was controlled by the Order of St.John of Jerusalem (the Hospitallers). In the 13th century it was being run Matthew de Cumbe, the de Cumbes were still in control of the manor in the C15th; but by the end of the C16th the manor was acquired by the Stapleys of Twineham.
