The market town of Haverhill, while geographically in Suffolk, seems spiritually to have a foot in Essex which it borders, and maybe a toe in London. This comes from the quadrupling of the population since the middle of the last century after Haverhill became an “expansion†town for London. This, however, is not a town without history. The Romans were here, and Haverhill was listed in the Domesday Book. The town probably takes its name from being the base for Danish pirate and later warrior king Haver, who went from coastal raids to defeating Alfred the Great and occupying London at one point.
