Harwich in Essex is one of England's ferry ports. The town became a naval base in 1657 and was heavily fortified by Harwich Redoubt, Beacon Hill Battery, and Bath Side Battery. The Royal Navy is no longer present in Harwich but adjacent Parkeston continues to offer regular ferry services to Holland and Esbjerg in Denmark. There’s a Blue Flag beach at Dovercourt, just south of the town. Harwich has two notable "claims to fame", the Mayflower that took the Pilgrim Fathers to America was a Harwich ship, and famous diarist, Samuel Pepys was once its MP.
