Eight miles south of Wooler and ten miles northwest of Alnwick in Northumberland in north east England, approximately 40 miles north of Newcastle, lies the small village of Powburn on the A697, portrayed in the 1950’s as a ’lively little main road village’. The name is thought to mean 'slow-moving stream' although another translation suggests that the settlement that grew there was situated near to a pool in the burn. Powburn today is situated near to the Breamish river. The Roman road known as Devil's Causeway, extending from north of Corbridge to Berwick-upon-Tweed, crosses the Breamish at Powburn on its way north.
