Gretna is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland situated at the head of the Solway Firth adjacent to the neighbouring village of Gretna Green, one mile north-west from the Scottish/English Border. Gretna was a planned village built in 1915 during WW1 to accommodate the workers of the great munitions factory which employed over 30,000 workers. The Devils Porridge Exhibition in Annan, explains the story of the factory. The village followed the principals of a 20th century government-sponsored ‘Garden City,’ and self-contained community to include the village hall, school, churches, shops and a cinema.
