Sitting on the Tail of the Bank, 22 miles downstream of Glasgow where the River Clyde widens into the Firth of Clyde, Greenock could be considered the larger, brawnier industrial cousin of its western neighbour Gourock. Like many of the towns in the Inverclyde region, Greenock’s past was shaped by the Clyde; it brought the town wealth and industry. From humble origins as a 16th Century fishing port, Greenock was on the map soon after the 1707 Act of Union. With the Union of the Three Kingdom’s, Greenock’s importance was swollen by international trade from Britain’s colonies across the Atlantic.
