The charming little town of Gorey (or Gourait) is about 5 to 8 miles from St Helier, depending upon whether you choose the inland route or the more scenic coastal route. Gorey has one of the Island of Jersey's three main harbours. It has a picturesque row of houses along its harbour. Below the castle there is a pier, which is the annual site for La Fete de la Mare. The strategic positioning of the harbour has led to it having been fortified since at least as far back as the Iron Age. The division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204 led to the creation of a castle at Mount Orgueil, built to help repel potential French invaders.
