The tiny village of Foxton in Leicestershire lies close to the A6 near to the town of Market Harborough. The village is very small but is well known because of the famous Foxton Locks. Situated on the Grand Union Canal, Foxton Locks are the largest example of so-called Staircase Locks in Britain. Staircase Locks are used to cope with a steep rise or fall along the route of a canal. Foxton's staircase consists of ten locks and is a remarkable feat of 19th century engineering. Work started in 1810 and was completed in 1814, helping to make the Grand Union Canal one of Britain's most important waterways of the 19th century.
