Fortrose is a historic village on the Black Isle in the Mid and Easter Ross area in the Highland region of Scotland situated opposite Fort George overlooking the Moray Firth. Fortrose began in 1455 when the settlements of Chanonry and Rosemarkie were united by the Bishop of Ross as an ecclesiastical burgh which was awarded the status of Royal Burgh in 1592. The village grew around Fortrose Cathedral, the red-sandstone ruins stand in Cathedral Square in the centre of the village. Fortrose is positioned on flat ground on top of the low cliff-tops above the shore-line, there is a narrow High Street with shops and amenities and a picturesque harbour which is home to the Chanonry Sailing Club.
