Ferryside still retains the feeling of traditional village life, Situated approx eight miles south of Carmarthan, its estuary setting provides spectacular views to the C13 Norman castle in the village of Llanstephan. As with so many parts of Carmarthenshire, the local, golden ,sandy beaches are close by and well worth visiting. Originally a landing place on the ferry route to Llanstephan , Ferryside was once an important point on the pilgrims’ route to St David’s cathedral. Historically an important centre of the cockle industry, the Ferryside cocklebeds are still intermittently opened to commercial pickers and at times this can lead to conflict – in 1993 the so called “cockle wars†broke out as rival gangs vied for the richest haul.
