The small village of Eyam in Derbyshire boasts a sad but noble history. In 1665 a flea-infested piece of cloth arrived from London, bringing the Black Death to the unsuspecting village. Upon discovering the outbreak of plague in the village, the villagers chose to isolate themselves from the surrounding areas, rather than allow the plague to spread further north. For over 16 months the plague raged through the village. When visitors finally entered the village again they found less than a quarter of its inhabitants had survived.
