The small town of Epworth, Lincolnshire lies on the A161, about halfway between Gainsborough and Goole. Epworth is situated in the Isle of Axholme in the North of Lincolnshire. The Isle of Axholme was actually an inland island, surrounded by rivers, until it was drained in the early 17th century by Dutch engineer Sir Cornelius Vermuyden. The draining represented a major feat of engineering at the time. Epworth is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Methodism. The Wesley brothers John and Charles, who founded Methodism, were born in Epworth where their father was Rector from 1695 to 1735.
