Earls Colne is a village in Essex named after the River Colne on which it stands, and the Earls of Oxford who held the manor between 1086 until 1703. A monastery, Colne Priory, was founded in the parish in about 1103 for monks of the Benedictine order. The monastery buildings fell into ruin, and most of the remains were swept away when the present house was built in 1826. The site of the old church and monastery is now scheduled as a national monument and a cross has been placed beyond which their former site can be viewed.
