Eaglescliffe is a small town just north of the river Tees, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham in north east England on the A135 Yarm Road, formerly the old A19. It adjoins a small village called Egglescliffe, which is thought to have been the original name of the town. According to local folklore, this was the name until a mistake was made on a sign at the railway station and afterwards it became known as Eaglescliffe. The Stockton and Darlington Railway passed through the grounds of Preston Hall in Eaglescliffe, which saw a famous race between a stagecoach traveling along the Yarm Road and Locomotive No 1, on the opening day of the railway.
