The accepted view is that the name Dukinfield refers to “ducks open land†–and that in the 12th century the presiding family took the name De Dokenfield and Robert de Dokenfeld became the Lord of the Manor. At this time Dukinfield benefited from large areas of good pasture and meadow land, the area proved excellent for farming and up until 1827 Dukinfield had a major agricultural industry supplying Stockport and Manchester with vegetables. The Industrial Age secured the growth of the area and with this the need for better communication links were understood and more bridges were built across the River Tame, canal construction took on a determination to ensure that Dukinfield was at the hub of industrial activity and Dukinfield welcomed the coming of the railway age.
