West Yorkshire’s Dewsbury is surrounded by the larger settlements of Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and Halifax, but with a population of nearly 55,000 it is a sizeable town in its own right, with a history in keeping. The town’s name is probably derived from Dew meaning stream, and burg, a fort. Dewsbury was of considerable ecclesiastical importance in Saxon times, St Paulinus having preached in the town in 627AD. Paulinus was the first Bishop of York. Dewsbury Minster is said to be sited on the spot by the Calder where he preached, and it was a foundation of some significance, receiving tithes from the surrounding district through the medieval era.
