The pace of Denton is mentioned in several 14th century documents, and by the 1660’s it had become a reasonably large village, home to around 500 people. By the 1800’s the population had grown again to around 2,500 and this was now a period of growth for the area, in the next 40 years the population had grown to 7,000 and by the 1950’s the population was over 25,000 and Denton was a suburb of Manchester. By 1974 this was to change and Denton was to become part of the Tameside Metropolitan Council as it is today.
