The little village of Deighton lies about five miles south of York on the A19 between that venerable city and Selby. Though at the last census in 2001 the population was only 308, the village still retains a pub, The White Swan. This is gentle arable country, the loamy soil supporting wheat, potatoes, beet and barley, so it is perhaps no coincidence that a celebrated breeder of Clydesdale horses should be in the area. Deighton makes a good base for visiting York’s many attractions – the wonderful railway museum and the Jorvik Viking experience among them.
