Originally known as Din-Gonwy is to be found in North Wales lying almost midway between Llandudno and Conwy – the name meant “Fort on the River Conwy†and it was one of the main residences of King Maelgwyn who built his castle here on this rocky outcrop overlooking the town which is better known today as Deganwy, the castle though no longer remains having been demolished by the Welsh Prince Llewelyn ap Gruffydd to prevent the English from using it ever again. As early as the 12th century there was a dock in Deganwy but it wasn’t until the 1880’s that it became an important part of the area’s economy.
