“What’s it called? Cumbernauld.†That was the slogan used to promote Cumbernauld on televisions across Scotland, and despite enjoying a measured reception, families soon gravitated towards the town. Created as a antidote to the cramped housing conditions in post-war Glasgow, Cumbernauld has become the 7th largest settlement in Scotland, with over 50,000 people calling it home. Cumbernauld became Scotland’s third New Town in 1955, and was immortalised in film when Gregory’s Girl, the 1981 film starring John Gordon Sinclair as the awkward adolescent, documented teenage life in the town.
