The town of Crowborough lies in the High Weald of Sussex (700+ft [200m] above sea level) close to the Kentish border on the A26 road 4miles (6km) from Tunbridge Wells and 14 miles (23km) from Lewes. The name derives from the Old English `crawe beorg` = Crow Hill ; it was known as Crowberge in 1390. It is first mentioned in a deed of 1292 but doesn`t really break cover until the mid-18th century. There is evidence of early iron smelting in the area and it is known that the Romans were active throughout the Weald exploiting the rich iron ore deposits.
