Just south of Darlington on the northeast coast of England, lies the village of Croft on Tees, in North Yorkshire in what was known as Richmondshire. It stands on the opposite side of the River Tees to Hurworth-on-Tees,on the A167, the bridge between them matking the boundary between North Yorkshire and County Durham – the exact point of transition being the fourth of the seven arches. St.Peters’ church in Croft is where Lewis Carroll’s father was rector and the character Cheshire Cat believed to have been inspired by a carving within.
