Six miles north east of Alnwick, on the Northumberland coast, lies the little village of Craster on a whinstone ridge named Chaster Heugh, from which it is thought to have taken its name. The surrounding area is mainly whinstone beds, an indentation providing Craster with a natural harbour. Two areas of rocks known as Little Car and Muckle Car protect this harbour. The township was given to Albert Craster, founder of the Craster family, in the twelth century. Craster Tower was built as an imposing residence east of the village, in which his family continued to live for many centuries.
